
There is no Phoenix experience worse than checking the thermostat in July and realizing the house is at 88°F — and the AC is running. Air is moving through the vents, the unit outside is humming, but nothing is cool. Here are the seven causes we diagnose most often, ranked by how common they are.
1. Dirty Air Filter (DIY Fix)
A clogged filter chokes airflow across the evaporator coil. Less air movement means less heat transfer, which means warm air at the vents. In Phoenix dust, filters need to be checked monthly during summer — not every three months like the package says.
DIY: Pull your filter, hold it up to a light. If you can't see light through it, replace it. Costs $5-25.
2. Low Refrigerant (Pro Only)
Your AC needs a precise charge of refrigerant to absorb heat from inside your home. If it's low — almost always because of a leak — the system can't cool effectively. You'll often see ice forming on the copper line at the outdoor unit.
Pro: Refrigerant is a regulated substance and you need EPA 608 certification to handle it legally. A pro will find the leak, repair it, and recharge the system properly. Don't trust anyone who recharges without finding the leak first.
3. Frozen Evaporator Coil (Sometimes DIY)
When airflow is restricted (dirty filter) or refrigerant is low, the evaporator coil temperature drops below freezing and ice forms. Once iced over, no air gets through at all.
DIY first step: Turn the system to "off" at the thermostat. Set the fan to "on" only. Let it run 2-3 hours to thaw the coil. Replace the filter. If it freezes up again within a day, call a pro — you have a refrigerant or airflow problem.
4. Faulty Thermostat (Sometimes DIY)
Sometimes the AC is fine — your thermostat is lying to it. Old mercury thermostats drift out of calibration. Smart thermostats sometimes need a software reset.
DIY: Replace the thermostat batteries. Try a different temperature setting. If a smart thermostat is acting weird, check the app for firmware updates.
5. Dirty Condenser Coil (DIY-Adjacent)
The outdoor unit dumps heat through coils on its sides. Phoenix dust, cottonwood fluff, and grass clippings clog those coils, which means the heat has nowhere to go — and your indoor air doesn't get cooled.
DIY: Turn off power at the disconnect. Spray the outside of the coils with a garden hose from outside-in. Don't use a pressure washer — you'll bend the fins.
6. Duct Leaks (Pro Only)
In Phoenix homes with ducts in the attic, leaks can dump 30%+ of your cooled air into 140°F attic space. The system runs constantly but the rooms never cool down.
Pro: A duct leak test takes about 90 minutes. Sealing leaky ducts can drop your summer bill by $40-80 a month.
7. Undersized System (Pro Diagnosis)
Sometimes the AC works fine — it's just too small for your house. This is especially common after a home addition, a re-roofing project that removed insulation, or a window replacement that wasn't matched to the existing system. A 3-ton AC that worked great for 1,800 square feet can't cool 2,400.
Pro: A Manual J load calculation will tell you what size system your home actually needs.
When to Call
If you've checked the filter and the system is still blowing warm air after 30 minutes, stop troubleshooting and call. In Phoenix summer, indoor temperatures climb fast — and a frozen coil that runs for hours can damage the compressor.
